The course also brought the participants to visit the Saraburi Sandbox project to see real world examples of decarbonization technologies. The development of the course is supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

This curriculum aims to align with Thailand’s 2050 Net Zero Cement & Concrete Roadmap as there are gaps in current university programs required to equip graduates with the skills to put decarbonization into practice. Main objectives of the course include:
• Building a Hub of Talents in Thailand for developing skilled professionals in cement & concrete decarbonization.
• Enhancing career prospects, upskilling, and charting new pathways for learners
• Deliver practical, hands-on experience by integrating work directly into the curriculum.
With each lesson, we hope to lay a solid foundation for future generations to continue a low-carbon Thailand💡because climate change is everyone’s business.

Chaired by Mr. Teeratas Israngkul Na Ayudhya, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Industrial Works, participants worked together to set the priorities that will accelerate progress in the next phase: 

• Finalize policy framework recommendations ahead of the National Policy Dialogue 
• Launch the final round of start-ups in the Innovation Acceleration Programme 
• Demonstrate co-processing of RDF from landfill and sludge, and develop an action plan to boost circularity and waste treatment capacity 
• Conceptual design of a mobile carbon capture testing unit for use by Thai cement stakeholders 

Thanks to the dedication of Thai partners and stakeholders, momentum is building towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for the sector – while simultaneously laying the groundwork for increased knowledge sharing across Southeast Asia, particularly with the Philippines and Malaysia

Key highlights from the study tour:

• Meeting with policy makers (Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Standards Council of Canada (SCC), Treasury board of Canada), gaining insights into Canada’s decarbonization policies including carbon pollution pricing strategies, Carbon Management, Cement & Concrete Breakthrough Initiative
• Learning from Canada Cement Association, which is driving industry-led efforts to cut over 15 Mt of GHG emissions by 2030.
• Exchanges with Alberta’s government, a leader in industrial emissions reductions, where carbon pricing has been in place since 2007.
• Visiting Heidelberg Materials Edmonton, witnessing carbon capture and storage technology in action.
• Engaging with InnoTech Millwoods, Emission Reduction Alberta & CanmetENERGY Ottawa on innovation and R&D experiences.
• Meeting Canadian innovators: Giatec, CarbiCrete, Carbon Corp, Carbon Upcycling Technologies and C-FER

The study tour reinforced the power of global collaboration in advancing decarbonization. As Thailand works towards decarbonize its cement and concrete sectors, learning from Canada’s experience will help drive policy innovation and scalable solutions for a low-carbon future.
